Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs

Wild Rye Café – Downtown, Seattle

Posted on: Thursday 12 May 2011

Spring is here!

I’ve been contemplating getting our winter coats dry cleaned and polishing my boots to pack away. For only the second time this spring, I went out without wearing a winter coat or waterproof jacket, without a scarf wound around my neck, and I removed the umbrella and gloves from my handbag. And I wore sunglasses. It was liberating.

I walked up to the new Wild Rye Café for lunch today. It is located opposite the Washington State Convention Centre. They bake their own breads and pastries and a house-made granola is also on the menu. I ordered the soup and half sandwich combo – potato and corn soup and roast beef sandwich with cheddar, tomato, lettuce and horseradish dressing on marbled rye. The meal is served classic diner style in a red basket and on checkered wax paper, with half a gherkin and house-made potato crisps.

The soup is full of chunky potato, potato skin and corn but I added a liberal sprinkle of pepper – extra seasoning and herbs would make it more palatable. The half sandwich had a generous portion of tender roast beef and the marbled rye is fresh and soft, although I would have preferred more horseradish cream or mustard. The house-made potato crisps were crunchy and not oily.

A lovely staff member offered a sample of the double chocolate brownie and it was only polite to accept one. It was rich and gooey and would be perfect with a cup of tea. With an enticing selection of sweets and comfortable stools, Wild Rye Café is a pleasant place for a quick lunch or an afternoon sugar hit.
